National Sales Tax?

CNN is reporting that the Republicans seem to be floating the idea that the federal income tax be replaced with a national sales tax. What's worse is that of the 18k respondants to the accompanying online survey, 65% agree that that would be a good idea.

This is a terrible idea. Hopefully, the truth will out in any substantive debate on the subject. This is one of those subjects that seems like a good idea at the time but will have the exact opposite effect as its ill-informed supporters think.

Talk about rigging the tax code to allow the rich to get richer... A national sales tax replacing the federal income tax would be about the most regresive form of taxation imaginable.
